Contents Ideal Photo's.

As i did for the front page i took a lot of photos then only chose a few to be edited, and then i would narrow it down to choose the final one for my one of the images on my contents page.

This image is one of the photos i choose from the many that i took, i thought this photo was a bit different and a more indie looking. I then edited by turning the image black and white and using the croping tool to just get him in the photo. I thought this would make a good photo because of the way he is standing with the little flame makes it more different and a bit quirky. But after editing a few more of the other photos i choose, i decided that this image was a bit boring with the black and white and did not look as good as the others, so i decided not to use this one.

This is another image i choose from the all the others and edited. I edited this by increading the brightness and then increasing the contrast, so it made all the color in that photo be a bit louder and brigter. I then cropped this image so i wouldnt have the curtain or the wadrobe in the image. This image i liked because of the way it turned out after editing it, with the colors being brighter and louder, i also liked it because it had the gutair in it, which actually makes him look like a muscian. But after i decided not to use this because of the gutair, it makes him look more like an indie boy instead of a Dj, that would make Dubstep and Drum&Bass music. Also it is too typical to have a gutair as a prop, as most muscian in magazines always tend to have a gutair or drums.
Instead of using this image for the contents, i have decided to use it on my double page spread this will make the readers more intrested to see a different artist on the double page spread, will appeal more to the readers, and also with the bright colors on the dark background it will make the picture 'pop' more.

This was another photo i choose amongst the others. I edited it by increasing the brightness and then increasing the temperture. When i fist took this photo, i thought it would look a bit different and edgy because of the dead rose, and all the rose petals that were picked and scatterd everywhere over him. But after i edited it and cropped it, i relised it wernt actually that good because you couldnt really see the petals because of the dark denim. Also when i had edited it, it did not have the same effect as some of the other photos did, espcally the one i have choosen for my final.

Front Page and Double Page Ideal Spread Photos.

When taking my photos for my front cover, i took a lot of photos and then edited a few of them that i thought were good photos, this is so i had a wide range of different photos to choose from. All of the photos are different, with different styles of editing and different poses with different backgrounds.

This was one of the other photos i choose to edit as i thought it was one of the better ones out of the many i took. When i edited it i increased the saturation of the photo, so her white face would stand out and it would give the color of this photo a 'pop'. I decided not to choose this photo as it would take a lot of time having to crop around the image and change the background. Also with her hair being messy and backcombed, it would make it hard to crop around all the full detail. As well there is a lot of space around the image, and finding features to fill this in would make the front cover very messy and un-tidy, so i decided not to use this one.

This was another photo i chose to edit amongst all the others. When i edited this image i increased the adaptive lighting so it would bring the darker bits out around her eyes and the cuts either side of her mouth would show more. This photo is good, because it's a different pose to what people on typical magazines would be doing, and this makes it more edgy. I chose not to use this photo because like before, the image would be two difficult to cut out because of the wires and her messy hair. Also it doesn't focus on the artist as much as it should for a front cover, as well the props that i have used, such as the speaker, you can not see them as much, and it does not give the same effect as it would do if they were in total view to the audience.

This was another photo i chose to edit out of all the others i took. I edited it by increasing the exposure in the photo and increasing the contrast so it makes the color more birght on the whole page, also it makes the background whiter so it would of made it easier to edit for me. The reason why i did not choose this photo is because of the person not making eye contact with the camera, all front cover images normally have an artist/artists making eye contact with the camera so it looks like they are looking out to the audience reading the magazine.

Titles & Headings.

When drawing my initial designs i also came up with four initial ideas for a title of my magazine, they were; 'Music', 'A-Punk', 'Crank' and '♫'.

I chose these four ideas because i thought they were simple and catchy so my target audience would be able to remember easy.

'Music' - I have decided not to use this one because it is too obvious and a slightly boring. It has no ring or catch to it, and it doesn't really show or sounds right for my music genre of my magazine.

'A-Punk' - I have decided not to use this one. I thought of this as it has the word 'Punk' in it, this represents the indie side to my magazine, and the sort of target audience i would be aiming for, with that 'punk/indie' style of fashion, this is the only thing i liked about and for me it did not add anything edgy or quirky about the magazine, and sounded a bit to girly.

'♫' - I have deiced not to use this one because of it would make it too complex for the readers to able to say what magazine they wanted, as it's not a word. I thought it would work well as no other magazine has a symbol as there title and it would make it different from other magazines, but as it is a symbol it would be to complex and difficult for the audience.

'Crank' - I have decided to use this one, because it has that rough and edgy sound about it, and it fits my genre of music for magazine well. Also it fits into both target audience as it's not to manly and to girly. When saying the word 'Crank' It sounds like a magazine as it has a ring to it, also it is very catchy and very simple for the readers to remember if they wanted to purchase this magazine. This name for the magazine is not too long of a word this makes it more of a better choice as well. The word 'Crank' will fit nicely on the front page of the magazine as the title is going to be positioned on the left side in a vertical line.

Double Spread - Final Photo's.

For this image, i increased the contrast and then used the burn tool on the outside edges. After then doing this i made the picture more sharper only slightly, so it would give it that more edgy and 'rough' look about the whole image. The style i chose fits in with the idea of the music artist.
This image will make a good photo for the double page spread, as we can see the whole of the artist at once and also the artist has good eye contact with the audience which is something that
will have an effect on the readers.

On my double page spread, i have chosen to have secondary images, these will be placed in the right corner of the page, to show a different side to the 'Joker'.
Both images have been edited in different ways, so when put next to each other, they will stand out just as much as the other. It will show the real contrast of the 'Joker'.

Contents Page - Final Photo's.

This is the image i will be using for one of my images on my contents page. I edited this photo as well because then it doesn't look so plain, when i edited it i decreased the adaptive lighting, so it gave it that darker edge on the outside and made the darker feautures stand out, such as his tattoo of 'Hate' on his knuckles. I also increased the sharpness of this photo to give it that ruff edge to the whole image.

This is the secondary image i shall be using on my contents page, this will be acting as another story that will be featured in the magazine. Also throughout the contents i have mentioned idea's about festivals. Also my ideal target audience was targeted at people who enjoy attending festivals and thoes kind of amtosphere. These photos were taken when i had attended a festival.

This is the thirs image i will be using on my contents page, i will have decreased the adaptive lighting slightly on my camera, so the readers could see the text on the image slightly clearer and make it easier for the audience to read the tickets.

Front Page - Final Photo's.

This is the image that i have used for my front cover, but i have edited it slightly to make it more edgy and not so plain looking. I have used a sepia effect and the decreased the brighten of the image, so it would darken the outside of her face, and also her eye as they had heavy black make up on them, this will put a focus on her white face.
Having this image as the background for my front cover, i think will be the most effective for the readers. As it's the only image there is only one thing to focus on, and it's quite a simple picture, also the music artist has good eye contact and for the front page this is something that is conventional in other magazines.

Final Ideas for Layouts.

For my final ideas, for my front page, contents and double page spread i have chosen amongst my initial ideas and have also mixed and matched some, so i could come to a final decision.

Front Cover
For my front cover i will be using initial design 2, as i like the idea of just the close up of one image. I think this will work best because i will make sure that the image of the artist will have good eye contact with the readers of the magazine to engage them more.

And i like the idea of the band index on this front page.
The only problem that could come from this idea of the front page would be having the letters stand out from the image and not blending in. I will make sure that this will not happen, and if it does then i will have to change the lighting on the picture to make it lighter so then the text will be able to stand out against the image.

Contents Page
I am going to be using initial design 2 for my final contents page. I like the idea of the 'Features' and 'Exclusive' being put onto that black background, i think that will make the page look very professional. Also i think the layout and positioning of all the photos will work will.

The only bad outcome from this page could be that it is on the block color background, of white. Having a white background makes it hard to fill and can leave big gaps. Hopefully i will be able to add certain features to cover up some space.

Double-Page Spread
As the double page spread is a large chunk of the magazine production and is most likely to be difficult i think. I will stink to initial design 3, because it is the most conventional it seems like a safe way to take, as i am gambling a lot on the front page. I think that this layout will be effective as most main music magazines use this layout.

I will hope the overlapping text will be effective and not cause problems as it does cross over the fold. This could be the only problem but easily avoidable.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

Each of us is motivated by needs. Our most basic needs are inborn, having evolved over tens of thousands of years. Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs helps to explain how these needs motivate us all.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs states that we must satisfy each need in turn, starting with the first, which deals with the most obvious needs for survival itself.

Only when the lower order needs of physical and emotional well-being are satisfied are we concerned with the higher order needs of influence and personal development.

Conversely, if the things that satisfy our lower order needs are swept away, we are no longer concerned about the maintenance of our higher order needs.

Maslow's original Hierarchy of Needs model was developed between 1943-1954, and first widely published in Motivation and Personality in 1954. At this time the Hierarchy of Needs model comprised five needs. This original version remains for most people the definitive Hierarchy of Needs.

Initial Design 3 - Double Page Spread.

I thought of this idea as it is a conventional style layout for my double page spread, the layout would be a whole image on one side of the page and the text on the other side, the main image will be a picture of the 'Joker' resting her feet on speakers and having good eye contact with the readers. I will then have the title of the story of the page crossing over both pages, in an 'edgy' and 'rough' font. the title of the page will say 'Are you ready?' and then just below 'The joker', the rhetorical question will draw the readers attention as they will be interested to know what the story is about.
In the top right corner, just beside the title, will be two other overlapping images of the 'Joker', this is s we can see the 'Joker' in different poses and styles, this will show the readers anther side to the artist.
The other bottom half of the the page will be the text, which will be an interview between Crank (the magazine) and the 'Joker', this font of writing will also be in the gothic font that is repeated throughout the magazine, also it will be in red and black which is also a repetitive color scheme we see through out the other pages.
In both bottom corners there will be the page numbers in red color writing, and just beside the page number on the left side will be a website for the magazine, this is also conventional on all magazine they have a website so the readers can look further into the story and read about other bits. The color of the website will also be red, to tie in with the color scheme.

Initial Design 3 - Contents Page

This contents page is like a typical contents page found in a popular music magazine. There is two images and the information about what will be inside the magazine.
On this page i would like a red and yellow theme, like a warning idea. The background color of this contents page, will be a faded red color so the information on this page would stand out. There will be a black and white image of an artist in the top right corner with a yellow border outline, and then just below that, will be an advertisement for a festival or a tour, this will be also outlined with a yellow border. Taking up the majority of the left side, will be the contents information about what will be featured inside and the page numbers. The writing of this will be black and the page number information also yellow. Then in the top left corner there would be the information like the name of this page, contents and the title of the magazine also wrote there.

Initial Design 3 - Front Page

This front page is a bit more complicated then the two others before, as the positioning of things are a little bit more different.

The background of this front page will be grayish color, so it's not to white. Down the left hand side there is the title of the magazine 'A-Punk', this title will be written in a bold black color so it stands out amongst everything else. Just below the title will be the price of the magazine. Along the bottom will be a chance to win something inside, for example 'Free tickets to New York'. Just beside the the 'K', there is a small text box which is the 'Band Index', this will mention bands that will be inside the magazine. There are then two images that are overlapping each other, this will be overlapping each other, and they will be of two Dj's that are talking about what festival will be better. The text on this front page will be a charcoal grey color, so it dose not take away all the attention from the images and the title.

Initial Deisgn 2 - Double Page Spread

This double spread page is simple and only the text would be crossing over to the other page.
The color of this page will be black as there is a few gaps in the paper where nothing is there. The title of this page, 'The Festive Season' will be written in bright blue, and outlined in white. The text will be bold and bright crossing over and in the centre of the page so it is a main focus to the audience. In the top left hand corner will be a little box across the page about dates for certain festivals that fit the genre of music this magazine is aimed at. The bottom right will be a text box with information about the festivals and what ones are coming up soon. Above the word season, will be an interview between us and one of the Dj's that will be attending one of the festivals, and below season, to the left is another text box, with more information about festivals. In the bottom right corner will be an image of a bunch a Dj's that attended a festival last year. All text will be written in white, and the columns there in will be outlined in bright blue, this will then fit in with the neon blue and white, theme.

Initial Design 2 - Contents Page

On my contents page i am going to have a plain white background as there is a lot of information to take in.
On the right side i will have a image of an attractive male artist, this will balance the target audience as the picture of the male artist will be attractive and attract the female teenage attention. I will make sure that male model will be wearing a white t-shirt so it in with the the color scheme. The name of the artist will be written below the image in a Gothic font and in a red color. The secondary image will be a picture of a festival, this will be a feature that will appear in the magazine. There will be a third image of a bunch of tickets these images will also be a feature that would appear in my magazine, also a story that is listed on the contents page.
At the top left corner there will the date, the title of the magazine and the title of the page, these will be also written in a Gothic, red style font this will all fit in the the color scheme.
Below this there will be a conventional use from a magazine i had analysed, this will be when the text on the page as little titles to break them into sections, i will use a black thick line and then put white text over the top, so it stands out more.
To keep in with the color scheme of red white and black, i will also have the page numbers in red, the text in black and the titles in red.

Initial Design 2 - Front Cover.

This front page wwould have the image as it's background, taking up the whole A4 page. The image will be of the artisit 'Joker' doing a pose, it will be a close up image so the reader has the full effect of the artist.
The title of the magazine will be on the side vertically, this is un-conventional to do, but i have decided to challenge this convention because i think that it will make the magazine more 'edgy' and different, also by having the title vertically on the left side will keep the main focus on the image of the artist, the title will be in the color red, to fit into a theme of the red black and white. The masthead will be positioned just at the bottom, under the face of the artist, (along her neck) this will be in the color red and white, i will make the name of the artist bigger, so it draws more attention of the readers and stands out more to them.
In the top right corner of the page i will have a bar code, this is conventional as every magazine has to have a bar code, it will be placed in the top right corner so it is out of the way and not over any text. Also another convention i will have will be a puff, this will be positioned at the bottom right corner. A puff will be used because i think it will be a good advertisement idea to show the readers what the magazine is about, the puff will say 'The ONLY Dubstep/Drum&Bass magazine' the emphasis on the word only stands out the readers this magazine is one of a kind.
Also on my front cover, to not make it look so playing i will have a feature called a 'Band Index', this will be a little box that will inform the readers what bands will be in the magazine, i will use celebrity endorsement, by mentioning real music artist to draw in the attention of the readers. This text will also be in red to fit in of the color scheme of red, white and black.

Initial Design 1 - Double Page Spread.

This double spread page focus's on the images mostly. The background will be white so it's simple, as it is a very busy page with a lot of images and text on it.
The main image of a crowd at a festival will be in the middle crossing onto both of the pages, around the outside of the main image, there will be smaller images mixed between people that attended the different festivals and of 'celebrities' who played at the different festivals. Below these images will be a short bit of text about what they said, and the festival they had attended. In the top left corner of the main image, there will be a "Festival Index", this will tell the readers about all the different festivals that will be happening this year, that would feature bands that are the genre of the magazine (Dubstep/Drum&Bass). Then in the bottom left corner there will be a paragraph or two, about the festivals this year, ticket information, what are the mains one etc, and finally in the bottom right corner there will be a "Top tips" this will tell the readers tips if there planning on attending a festivals, what to get and where to get these things from.
The titles will be in big bold aqua/blue color of writing so it stands out to the readers, it will also be in bold so it has more of an affect on the readers. All the other text will be written in a more slightly darker blue, so the color code is all the same.

Initial Design 1 - Contents Page.

This layout is a very simple layout again, it also focuses on the main image so it stands out more to the readers and would be the main focus.

This contents page will be on a black background, with one main picture of a famous landmark/building, and it will be a feature that would be inside the magazine, and beside the picture, in the top right corner there is a large 40, this is so the readers are drawn more to this story and would be able to go straight to that page and read the article. Below in a smaller box will be the contents page details, which will tell the audience the page numbers for the stories, also having the information smaller doesn't bore the readers as much, as to a majority of the audience a lot of text and information would not be appealing to the readers of this magazine. In the top left corner there is the date so the audience know if the magazine is the recent one, and in the top right corner you see the title of this page which is the contents and just below that the name of the magazine is written, this gives the contents page a bit more structure. All the writing on this page will be written in gold, and the page numbers in a red color, this gives the contents page a black and gold theme, with a bit of red. This will give the page a more classy and professional look.

Initial Design 1 - Front Page.

On this front page i have used a simple/classic layout, i choose this because it focuses on the main image, which would be a main feature inside the magazine.

The whole background of this page will be white, so all the font and writing will stand out against it. I will have one large image for this front page, which the whole image will cover the whole page. The picture will be of three men standing a bit of a distance away from each other and posing with a straight face at this camera, the title will be "Boys Are Back..", written in a large font and in red and just bellow in a smaller font of writing would be "To rock the reading festival." also in red writing. The magazine name will be written in black with a red shadowed outline, so it contrasts with the title of the story. In the top right hand corner i will have a pug with the price written inside it, so it stands out as it is a low price for a music magazine. in the bottom left hand corner i will have another pug that also has a small teaser, that will say "New inside, chance to win a trip to New York.", this also is another tease for the readers, and will give them another reason to look inside the magazine. In the bottom right hand corner there will be another box of information, the text will be called "*Band Index*" this will let the readers know what bands will be featured inside the magazine, the name of the bands will be in the genre of indie/dub-step/drum and bass.

Initial Design.

I will make three initial designs for each part of my magazine, the front page, contents and the double spread page. I will do this so i can compare the three ideas for each part and then pick my final idea. I can also mix and match my ideas from the different designs.

I will make three different front covers, with three completely different images with different camera angles and different poses. The layouts will be different as well too, for example like the positioning of the master head.

Also i will pick three different layouts for the contents page, i will have a lot different images so that it results in three different images on the contents and one of them will be the feature story for my double page spread. Also the lay out of the contents page will be different for example the positioning of the actual information of what is inside.

And finally for my double spread i will pick one off three big images to have and have three different layouts to choose from, also on this page there is a lot of information to take in so the positioning will be hard to choose.
From these three designs on each part i will choose or mix and match them for my final design.

Target Audience

This is Bobby (Second from left). Bobby likes rock/indie genre music, such as artists like Jamie T, Kings of Leon, The Klaxons and One Night Only. He also likes dub-step music and drum and bass, such as Prodigy, Chase and Status and Sub Focus. Bobby would read magazine such as Q, NME and Mix Mag, these genres of music are the types of music i would like my magazine to be like.

The style/fashion bobby wears has a very punk rock attitude which adds to the genre of music he likes. The general first image you see of Bobby would be that his fashion sense is very different. Also the fact that Bobby has tatoos on his arm adds to the image of the punk/indie rock fashion/style. Also the glasses that Bobby is wearing is seen on celebrities now days in big magazines.

Bobby would be an ideal target audience for my magazine as of the genre of music he likes would be along the same lines as my music magazine.
